How Long does it take for Monster to Kick In?

How Long does it take for Monster to Kick In?

Sometimes, you desperately need an energy boost to get you through a mid day slump, or to give an extra kick when on the go. After downing a whole can of energy drink, you're still waiting for that pick-me-up to kick in. Ever wondered why there's a delay? Is it due to caffeine tolerance, or something else?

The answer is DIGESTION

The reason you don't feel your desired energy boost immediately after drinking is pretty simple. Anything you consume, like Monster energy drinks, coffee, even pills or gummies, needs to go through you digestive system first before being absorbed by your body.

I'll spare you the recap of high school biology, but basically:

  1. Anything you drink or eat passes through your tummy first, where it sits in harsh stomach acid. This could be bad for certain supplements and active ingredients which may not survive to be absorbed. Always be aware if you're actually getting the full dose of what you paid for!

  2. Only after the food or drink moves on to the rest of the gastrointestinal tract does caffeine start to be absorbed into the bloodstream.

  3. Subsequently, caffeine is distributed around the body via the bloodstream to the brain, where it does it's job to give you an energy boost.

The entire process from consumption to boost takes anywhere from 30 - 60 minutes! That's why you often hear about 'pre-workout' supplements where you need to consume in advance to experience the beneficial effects later.

The worst of both worlds

Be aware that absorption is also 'uncontrolled'! You receive your energy boost 30 - 60 minutes later, and also fall victim to jitters and crashes. That's because the body doesn't know better and absorbs a huge chunk of caffeine all at once. What if I need an immediate boost?

I'm not sure about you, but my life doesn't stick to a fixed schedule. Whether you're at school, in the office, or on the move, you've got enough to worry about besides timing your energy consumption. Sure, a can of Monster Energy is great during downtime, but what if you need a pick-me-up in class, in a meeting or while riding or driving?

PSA: Don't try to juggle a can of energy drink while riding a bicycle on the street. It doesn't end well. Let's just say I tried.

Other traditional ways of getting your energy boost like pills or gummies are more convenient, but they still have to go through the whole digestion delay, meaning no immediate boost.
