Is Caffeine Good for You?

Caffeine does help!

Caffeine has indeed been shown to improve performance in a variety of tasks! Many studies have focussed on the beneficial effects of caffeine, especially in the military and in sports.

For example, a Canadian Military study concluded that increasing caffeine dosage led to improvements in

  1. Visual acuity
  2. Reaction time
  3. Pattern matching

The study resulted in caffeine gums being issued to service personnel in the field to support their mental alertness.

In sports, the results were less clear cut. The studies were mainly on sports men and women at the amateur level, with mostly directional (but not significant) improvement. It's thought that at the elite level, where even 1% of improvement could determine winning and losing, the benefits of caffeine may be more pronounced. However, to date no such large scale study exists.

So I should have my caffeine drink whenever I need it?

Hold you horses! The reality is much more complicated. Firstly, bear in mind that the US Food and Drug Administration's recommended maximum daily intake of caffeine for healthy adults is 400mg/day. This is because over consumption of caffeine does have side effects like heart palpitations. For pregnant women or children, this daily limit is 200mg/day.

Furthermore, bear in mind that you don't receive a caffeine boost immediately after drinking that Monster energy drink or Starbucks coffee! This is because your drink needs to pass through your tummy and liver before the caffeine is absorbed into your bloodstream. It takes up to 60 minutes to reach peak caffeine levels in your body!

Remember the Canadian Military study? A key conclusion was to give the soldiers caffeine gums, because chewing in the mouth allows the caffeine to be absorbed directly through the gums and cheeks.
